The Refuge's Best Birding Months Share a Calendar With Its Hunt Season. Here's How to Read It From Mims

November 5, 2026

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says the best birding at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge generally runs from November through April. Peak winter waterfowl counts there often top 100,000 birds. The refuge's 2026–27 waterfowl hunt brochure covers almost exactly the same months. The first phase runs November 21 through 29, 2026, and the second runs December 12, 2026 through January 31, 2027.

The hunt runs on a fixed weekly pattern, in fixed places, and stops at a fixed hour. If you live in Mims and treat the refuge as your backyard, you can mark the quietest winter mornings before you leave the house.

The week, as the brochure prints it

The FWS waterfowl hunting regulations for 2026–2027 allow hunting on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day are added when they fall inside the state's waterfowl season. Legal shooting hours run from a half hour before sunrise until noon. Hunters may not enter before 4 a.m., and they must be off the refuge with all their gear by 1 p.m.

Line that up with the refuge Visitor Center's listed hours of Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the week sorts itself out.

Day Hunting allowed in designated areas Visitor Center listed as open
Monday No No
Tuesday No Yes, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Wednesday Yes, shooting until noon Yes
Thursday No, except Thanksgiving Yes
Friday No, except Christmas and New Year's Day Yes
Saturday Yes, shooting until noon Yes
Sunday Yes, shooting until noon No

Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings are the ones where the hunt is off and the Visitor Center is listed as open. This season has three exceptions that are easy to miss. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, inside the first phase. Christmas and New Year's Day both land on Fridays this season, inside the second phase. All three are hunt days.

Counting the youth hunt on Saturday, November 14, the brochure schedules 32 hunt days between mid-November and January 31. That leaves most winter mornings hunt-free, and every afternoon. FWS also says waterfowl hunting is limited to designated areas covering 36,000 acres, so hunt mornings don't close the refuge to everyone else. The brochure also labels the state season dates "proposed," pending final rule adoption, so check the linked brochure again before you put them on the fridge.

Where hunters are kept out

The places most people from Mims actually drive to are the ones the brochure walls off from hunting traffic. It bars anyone from using Black Point Wildlife Drive, Playalinda Beach Road or Scrub Ridge Trail to get in, launch a boat or park a vehicle for hunting. Shooting is banned within 150 yards of any paved road, and within 25 feet of a dike, dirt road or railroad grade. Shooting over a dike or roadway is banned too. The waters of the Banana River are closed to hunting at all times.

The hunting itself goes where the ducks gather. FWS describes the biggest concentrations as being in the open brackish water of Mosquito Lagoon and in impoundments managed for freshwater. Areas 1 and 4 need a separate quota permit, drawn through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. During the quota season, the stretch of the Indian River inside the refuge boundary next to those two areas is closed to all hunting. If you paddle or fish the lagoon side, these are the rules that apply to your morning. If you drive Black Point, they mostly explain the boat trailers you may see elsewhere on a Wednesday.

The pass is the same either way. FWS lists a $10 daily vehicle pass and a $25 annual pass. One is required for Black Point Wildlife Drive and Bio Lab Road, and for the boat launches at Bairs Cove, Beacon 42 and Bio Lab. If you plan more than two winter visits, the annual pass costs less.

Three things that can override the calendar

The hunt schedule is the one part of a winter refuge plan you can predict. Three other things can change a morning with little warning.

  1. NASA. The refuge sits as an overlay on Kennedy Space Center, and the hunt brochure says the refuge and KSC can close any part of it for any length of time. Artemis II showed how far that can reach. Hometown News Brevard reported that the Playalinda District's hours would be cut to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from January 12 through 31 to support that mission. The whole district would then close from January 31 through February 6, or until the day of a successful launch.
  2. Weather at Playalinda. On October 25, 2026, Canaveral National Seashore posted a closure after strong winds left sand and water on the road. It covered the main Playalinda road north of Eddy Creek, Parking Lots 8 through 13, and the beach north of the Eddy Creek boardwalk, and no backcountry hiking permits were being issued while it lasted. The alert gave no reopening date, so check the NPS alerts and conditions page before driving out. The seashore's posted hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. with last entry at 5 p.m., and fee stations take only digital passes or credit and debit cards. The NPS lists a $25 private vehicle pass good for seven days in a row. This is a separate charge from the refuge pass.
  3. The Visitor Center building. FWS gives directions from the refuge entrance at the east end of the A. Max Brewer Causeway bridge, about four miles east along SR 406 to the Visitor Center. The building was closed for construction during fiscal year 2025, and signs sent visitors to a temporary contact station instead. In its Winter 2025 newsletter, the Merritt Island Wildlife Association said that station was planned for the refuge's west entrance by Parrish Park. If you're counting on the building for a pass, a map or restrooms, call the refuge at 321-861-0669 first.

January is when all of it stacks up

The second hunt phase runs through January 31, and January is also the month the season's best viewing peaks. The Merritt Island Wildlife Association's Winter 2025 newsletter calls January peak time for Roseate Spoonbills. It says Black Point can hold a dozen or more waterfowl species, and that its changing water levels draw shorebirds and waders. The same piece suggests Haulover Canal's kayak launch and the Manatee Observation area, just across the drawbridge, as a next stop after Black Point. FWS's own advice is to go early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

The Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival runs January 20 through 24, 2027, based at the Radisson Resort at the Port in Cape Canaveral. Its expo hall is free and open to the public January 20 through 23. Several of the festival field trips head straight back north. On Wednesday, January 20, a beginner trip on Black Point Wildlife Drive with Refuge Ranger Kim meets at the Visitor Center and boards a bus. The same day, a Merritt Island NWR "Hotspots" tour leaves from Parrish Park, and its listing expects 15 or more waterfowl species. Thursday, January 21, brings a guided Shiloh Marsh outing and another hotspots trip.

January 20 is a scheduled hunt Wednesday, and the beginner trip still runs on Black Point. That's the brochure's layout at work, since Black Point is one of the routes hunters may not use.

If the festival pulls you south to Cape Canaveral before sunrise, plan for I-95. FDOT is starting a $2.98 million resurfacing of about three miles of I-95, from SR 46 to the southbound rest area in Mims. Its project flyer gives a November 2026 start and an estimated finish in early 2027. Expect intermittent single-lane closures, nighttime double-lane closures from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., and possible ramp closures at the interchange from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. FDOT calls that schedule an estimate that weather can shift. Pre-dawn drives fall right inside those closure windows, so check CFLRoads the night before.

Hunt Saturdays with a plan closer to home

Two Saturday markets in Mims land in the middle of the hunt phases. Indian River Honey Company, at 6720 US 1, lists its third Mini Market for November 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Every vendor is a maker, grower or creator age 17 or younger. That's the last Saturday of the first hunt phase. The same venue lists a holiday market on December 19 starting at 10 a.m., with homegrown and handmade goods, a food truck and free admission. That falls on the second weekend of the second phase.

Both markets open just before shooting hours end at noon, and the 1 p.m. deadline for hunters to clear out comes not long after. One way to use a hunt Saturday is a slow morning on US 1, then a late-afternoon run to Black Point. That window lines up with FWS's own advice for seeing the most birds.

At In The Home Zone Realty, the refuge is part of why so many of our neighbors chose North Brevard in the first place, and we're always glad to talk about which corners of Mims and Titusville put Black Point or Haulover Canal closest to your door.
